The project for supply and installation of 1500 Afridev Hand Pumps for augmentation of rural water supply in Cambodia was jointly inaugurated by H.E. Dr. Ouk Rabun, Minister of Rural Development and Ambassador HE Naveen Srivastava on 20 April 2017 in a ceremony held at Kdol Phsar village, Tunlung commune, Memot District, Tbong Khmum Province. The inaugural ceremony was also attended by Mr. R.K. Gupta, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, WAPCOS Limited and delegation, senior officials from Rural Water Supply, Rural Health Care and Department of Community Development along with a large number of local populace.
Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India has extended financial support of US$ 12 million for this project with the objective to provide safe drinking water to the target communities. WAPCOS Limited, a Government of India Enterprise, has been entrusted with the work for installation of 1500 Hand Pumps in Tbong Khmum, Banteay Meanchey, Kampong Chhang and Svay Rieng Provinces.
On the occasion, Minister of Rural Development H.E. Dr. Ouk Rabun expressed sincere thanks to the Government of India for providing assistance through this project. He highly appreciated the project and said that it would help achieve the target set by the government to provide improved water supply and sanitation to 60% of the rural population of Cambodia by 2018 as per Ministry of Rural Development Action Plan 2014-18.
In his remarks Ambassador H.E. Srivastava conveyed that India has been a good friend of Cambodia and the hand pump project is a good example of cooperation between the two countries which would benefit more than 300,000 people living in rural areas. WAPCOS CMD Mr. Gupta expressed that WAPCOS ties with Cambodia were deeply rooted by way of sharing a work relationship for more than 15 years and this was the eighth project being implemented.
